Tech Link: 10 Reasons It Doesn’t Pay To Be “The Computer Guy”

I don't really fully agree with everything the author at LifeReboot says, but as a "just another computer guy" myself, I understand him and his article a lot. Come to think of it, a lot of his concerns have merit when I think about my friends who works as an IT support. Anyway, check it out, it's an interesting read, if you can relate to it...

I only met my brother’s ex-girlfriend’s family once — the year they invited our family over to share Thanksgiving dinner. Since we were basically a group of strangers looking to make a good first impression, the table conversation was nothing more than friendly idle chitchat.

When I asked our hostess for more mashed potatoes, she took the opportunity to ask me about myself while dishing out my second helping — “So Shaun, what do you do for a living?”

Hesitantly, I responded: “I work in computer support.”

The transition to silence was immediate. All eyes suddenly turned to me, raised eyebrows all around. If you hadn’t heard my response, judging from everyone’s reaction you might think I said something outrageous like I was a male stripper or a gynecologist — but I knew the awkward silence would soon be broken by an overwhelming outpouring of computer questions.

“Oh wow, a computer guy!” — “So you know how to remove spyware and viruses and stuff, right?” — “Our family computer is really slow, I think it has a virus.” — “Do you have a business card, or can I get your number?”

I politely and patiently answered their questions, hoping that we’d exhaust the subject in a matter of minutes and then move on to something else. As it would turn out, my hopeful prediction was very wrong — the gentleman sitting next to me scooted his seat closer to me to begin an interrogation.

This man I was meeting for the first time must’ve truly believed that I was going to help him with his problem at that very moment. It didn’t matter how uninterested I looked or sounded, he was convinced that I must know the answer he’s looking for and he was determined he would get it.

Situations like this one were common for me. I’ve had eavesdropping strangers approach me with questions about their computer while I was eating in a restaurant. I’ve had oblivious coworkers step in front of me in a buffet line to tell me about their computer problems while I was serving myself food. I’ve had neighbors who spotted me from their window rush outside to coax me into working on their home computer while I was walking to the corner market. My knack for solving people’s computer problems had become so well-known among my neighborhood that these circumstances were near impossible to avoid.

You might be thinking, “So why complain? If your help is in high demand, why not embrace your talents and charge people for your time?”

I tried to for seven years. I’ve worked in the computer industry in various ways — help desk support, web design, consulting and sales, field technician, freelance computer specialist, and whatever other fancy name you want to give “the computer guy.”

I stopped enjoying it. There were certainly times when I enjoyed myself, but most of those times were when my computer talents were still developing. Once I stopped learning new things on the job, I would become fidgety and want to move on to something else.

From my career-hopping experiences in the computer industry, I’ve become acquainted with the Top Ten Reasons it doesn’t pay to be the computer guy:

Reason #10 - Most Of Your Accomplishments Are Invisible
The computer guy never hears anyone tell him, “I just want to let you know … everything is working fine!”

The reality is that people call the computer guy when something is wrong.

As a computer guy, if you work really hard to make everything work the way that it should, and things work fine, then people believe you don’t do anything. Everything you manage to get working correctly or do perfectly will forever remain unnoticed by computer users. They’ll only ever notice that you do anything when something isn’t working correctly, and you are called upon to fix it.

Reason #9 - Every Conversation You Have Is Roughly The Same
When the computer guy dares to mention what he does for a living, the typical response is, “I have a question about my home computer…”

Or when the computer guy first hears about a widespread problem within the computer network he’s responsible for, he can barely begin to assess the problem before a dozen other people call to report the same problem.

Or when the computer guy explains a certain process on a computer to a user who is incapable of retaining the process, he will inevitably need to reinstruct the user of this same process — indefinitely.

Reason #8 - You’re An Expert Of Bleeding-Edge Technology Products, Aren’t You?
The computer guy often finds himself in situations where someone is asking him for advice on a pending investment of the technological variety.

“I heard about (some hardware or software product) that can do (something desirable) for me. I brought you these (advertisements/reviews/printouts) because I wanted your recommendation. Which would you buy?”

Although the inquiring person sincerely trusts the computer guy’s judgment over their own, in almost every instance the real objective of these meetings is to ensure their own immunity from making a risky purchase.

If it turns out to be a bad investment, and they cannot get (the hardware or software product) to do (anything desirable), then you will be their personal scapegoat — “But honey, the computer guy said I should buy it!”

Reason #7 - Your Talents Are Forcibly Undervalued
Thanks to the constantly declining price of new computers, the computer guy cannot charge labor sums without a dispute. If he asks to be paid what he is worth, he will likely be met with the “why not buy new?” argument.

That is, desktop computers are always getting smaller, faster, and cheaper. It’s possible to purchase a new desktop computer for under $400. If the computer guy spends five hours fixing a computer and wants $100/hour for his time, his customer will be outraged, exclaiming “I didn’t even spend this much to BUY the computer, why should I pay this much just to FIX it?”

Reason #6 - You’re Never Allowed A Moment’s Peace
The computer guy is so prone to interruption that he rarely finds an opportunity to work on his own problems. This is because:

1. Computers never sleep.
2. Computer problems aren’t scheduled.
3. Every problem takes time to diagnose.
4. The computer guy can only give one problem his full attention.
5. Each user believes their problem deserves attention now.

Consequently, the computer guy has a 24/7 obligation to keep critical computer systems running, while simultaneously juggling everyone’s problems. He’ll often need to forfeit any opportunities to tend to his own needs for the sake of others — because at any moment, of any day, he can be interrupted by someone who wants to make their problem his problem.

Reason #5 - People Ask You To Perform Miracles
The computer guy is often mistaken for someone who possesses the combined skills of an old priest and a young priest. I’ll sum this up easily by example:

“No, I really can’t recover any files from your thumb drive, even if you did find it after it passed through your dog.”

Reason #4 - Your Assumed “All-Knowing” Status Sets You Up To Let People Down
There is no common understanding that there are smaller divisions within the computer industry, and that the computer guy cannot be an expert in all areas. What makes things worse, is when the computer guy attempts to explain this to someone asking for help, the person will often believe that the computer guy is withholding the desired knowledge to avoid having to help.

This is somewhat related to the next reason:

Reason #3 - You Possess Unlimited Responsibility
The computer guy is expected to solve problems. It is difficult to determine the boundaries of that expectation.

Some of the oddest things that I’ve been asked to do include:

1. Use pirated software to undelete important company files.
2. Create an Intranet, after explaining I didn’t know how to.
3. Teach someone how to hide their pornography collection.

Solving problems can range from replacing batteries in a wireless keyboard to investigating why the entire building loses power at the same time every morning. Resolutions can necessitate weaving a 50-foot cable through a drop ceiling, or wriggling under a house on your belly to add an electrical outlet.

Reasons #4 and #3 boil down to this: no matter how often you want to play the role of a hero, there will always be circumstances that test the limits of your ability to be one. It’s difficult to judge when helping someone means doing something immoral, and it’s even harder to admit you are unable to solve someone’s problem — and chances are, that someone will view you as incompetent because you were unable to help them.

Reason #2 - A Life Of Alienation
People only talk to the computer guy when they need him to fix something. Also, when the computer guy approaches a user, they’ll hop up out of their chair under the presumption that he’s there to fix something — as if it would never be expected that he only wants to strike up a conversation.

The fact that the computer guy never gets a moment’s peace can also practically force him to withdraw into solitude. His co-workers don’t understand that he doesn’t want to hear about their computer problems during his lunch hour — he does that every other hour of the day. That’s why the computer guy eats lunch alone with his door closed, or goes out to eat every day — not because he’s unfriendly, but because he needs to escape the incessant interruptions.

Reason #1 - You Have No Identity
It’s an awful experience when the computer guy shows up at a neighbor’s doorstep with a plate of Christmas cookies, only to have the child who answered the door call out, “Mom, the computer guy is here!” He begs for an identity that is not directly associated with computers, but “the computer guy” label walks ahead of him — it simply cannot be avoided. I was given a name and I’d love to be addressed by it.

Having read these reasons, you may believe that I’m complaining. It’s true that I was upset with many aspects of my life as the computer guy, but I’m past the point of complaining.

I took a good hard look at my existence and realized that things were not likely to change in the line of work I had chosen. Instead of just complaining, I took action and began making positive changes in my life.

Working in the computer industry isn’t for everybody. It wasn’t for me. I’ve compiled my reasons for putting it behind me and placed them here, so that anyone who is unsatisfied with their life working in computers might recognize it’s not for them either.

Tech Link (Industry): Fuad Abazovic waves the INQ goodbye

Sorry, when speaking of INQ, I always don't have anything witty to add (come to think of it, whether it's INQ or other things, I don't have anythign witty to add). Anyway, it's about FUDO leaving INQ for good. Check it out....

Subject: fudo

This is NOT a flame.

Good luck to you Fuad. Sincerely. I believe this is my second letter to Inq ever, and I believe this warrants it. I've read the Inq ALOT over the years, and while not everything is 100 percent accurate, it is the first thing i look at when i pop onto the web. I could never understand the utter lack of dignity some people have in regards to Fuad. If it weren't for people like him that push the envelope of news and such, the web would be a pretty boring place, for me at least.

I really don't know how he handles all the critisism he recieves, but i have huge respect for him for being able to do so. In fact, if he does have some involvement in RyderMark, i will purchase it for that reason alone, to show my support. And i've already bookmarked his new website. I hope everyone at the Inq appreciates what he's done.

And I have no doubt that there are companies out there that USE Fuad to spread dissinformation and lies, in the interest of distancing themselves from said lies. The people that use the Inq as pawns are the ones that should be chastised and punished, not the other way around. It sickens me and it has for a long time. I'm sure there are many reporters for the Inq that get used in that way. In any event, I really do wish Fuad the best of luck. So many people bash him, it makes me very VERY angry. So this is my only way to show some appreciation, and i'm sure others feel similarily.

Again, good luck Fuad.

Brag: January'07 is record hits for FanBoy site!

I just noticed that January'2007 has been the highest number of hits of FanBoy history. You can click on the image for the full size.

It seems that my exploit with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4300 and Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4400 is the "crowd drawer" of the site, but that's not to say that other links aren't getting the attention.

In addition, it looks like all my articles are getting a lot of Google hits lately as well. I don't know why such suddenly happened, or maybe, it happened gradually. But whatever the reasons, I am glad that I am reaching more and more crowds this year. I am pleased that I am able to share my rants, brags, and other blabberings to more people.

Thanks for visiting the site! Till next, FanBoy out...

Tech Link (Processor): The Desktop CPU Comparison Guide

A new revision of the Desktop CPU has been posted over at TechArp. I don't really care much about non-Intel CPU since I always have the latest one anyway and available to all visitors by clicking on the Intel® Processor Details link. But if you are interested about other CPUs, then expand and read more.

There are so many CPU models that it has become quite impossible to keep up with the different models or even remember their specifications!

Therefore, we decided to compile this guide to provide an easy reference for those who are interested in comparing the specifications of the various desktop CPUs in the market, as well as those already obsolescent or obsolete.

Currently covering over 580 desktop CPUs, this comprehensive comparison will allow you to easily compare up to 18 different specifications for each and every CPU!

We hope it will prove to be a useful reference. We will keep this guide updated regularly so do check back for the latest updates!

Misc: THG Upgraded; Gear Digest Launched

THG have just undergone another make over. They look a lot cleaner now, and I have to say I like this one better than the old. However, it doesn't look like a tech site anymore, it looks more like a marketing site, an Apple* site if you may. Anyway, check their site out and maybe see if its something you like, or you don't like, or you just don't care what they look like, or have never heard of the site before. Expand to read what they have to say about it.

Can we make you happy? Probably not, but we keep trying. In that spirit, 2007 is going to be a year of changes for us, changes that we hope will make you happy.

You will see some of those changes in our network today, changes designed to address some of your concerns, as well as adding opportunities for future expansion:

MobilityGuru and DenGuru have been combined into one site called Gear Digest (www.geardigest.com), We hope that in so doing, we will be better able to serve up reviews, news, and information on all things consumer electronics. There is a world of technology outside of the traditional PC market and we want to cover it, and bring our perspective to bear.
Tom's Hardware Guide has had a facelift. We have tried to clean up the design, and make it easier for our audience to navigate the site. I hope that you will find it an improvement and a benefit.
We have added drop down menus in the left hand navigation bar which should get you to our most popular categories quickly, and intuitively.
The Search function on the network has been improved. It should be quicker, and deliver the results you need.
We have made it easier for you to access our Archives, which are extensive, and go all the way back to 1996 when Tom's Hardware Guide first opened up shop.
We are going to be doing more on the video front so, we have placed a direct link to our videos in our navigation.
We have a few blogs running today, but we expect to have many more in the coming year. You will find a link to our blogs now integrated into the navigation.
The article pages have been reformatted to increase the amount of content per page, reducing the number of clicks you have to make, and we are working hard to reduce the clutter on those pages.
We have changed the TG Publishing corporate logo, and updated the corporate web site, too.
That's just today. There will be a number of other updates to the site over the coming months. Yes, there will be an article print function. Yes, TG Daily is getting a makeover soon. Yes, we will be adding new categories to all of the sites, and increasing our coverage. No, we don't give test hardware away to pleading members of our audience.

Just drop me a line with any comments or suggestions to omid@tgpublishing.net. I cannot promise that I will answer every email, but I will read them all. Finally, if you find a bug, or have problems with a particular browser, please let webmaster@tomshardware.com know so we can make the necessary fixes.

Rant: Removing Meebo

I decided that I will remove Meebo since I will not be having enough time to have a chat with my visitors. I can't believe my Meebo would get so busy, that, I never had time to answer them. It seems that the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4300 has reached many crooks and crannies on the web and I just got swarmed with Meebo IMs.

At first, it was manageable, I can answer a few chats here and there. However, reality sets in and I just can't give each visitor a nice warm interaction that I hope I could maintain and muster. I stopped logging in since I feel that I can't really give any good interaction. In the end, I feel I am cheating my visitors if I don't log in to meebo, so now, I'll remove it.

I'll try and find other ways and means to have interaction aside from the "comments" section. I receive emails that Blog post comments isn't really "nice" because once the Blog has dropped down further into the archive, it's not easily seen even when the Blog is "commented" again. Well, the work around is just bookmark a specific Blog but that's a crude workaround. Anyway, since I really don't expect any huge interaction (nor can I provide much time for that), let's just stick with Blog comments, and email.

And yes, Tag Board is not coming up agan because of the annoying pop up. Laterz....

Rant: Removing Tag Board for good...

I have just installed Tag-Board about two days ago and I thought it was great. I mean, I waited for it to come back online after several months of it not working. I never had complaints, I mean, it was free anyway so what's to complain if it goes down.

So when I did check that it was up and running, and my account was still valid, I never hesitated to bring it back up. It all went spiffy, no issue whatsoever, and the installation of the Javascript is plain and straightforward with the new Blogger 2.0 template.

However, what I didn't know is that this Tag-Board now comes with an excess baggage. I haven't really investigated it beyond what few reports I got, but all signs point to TagBoard. As soon as I installed, pop-up is now happening whenever I visit my site.

I am now removing the darn tag board, I have gotten used to living without it so I guess it's all for the better. FanBoy out!

Misc: Person of the Year: You

This is a very nice article from Time. I mean hey, "we" got the honorable mention this time around. And it's not just "we", it's actually "us", the Information Age users. I agree with the article completely that "onliners" should be given recognition for the boom of so many interesting "ideas" found on the site. Below is an excerpt, you may want to visit the site for the full scoop.

The "Great Man" theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men." He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. That theory took a serious beating this year.

Misc: New Layout

Hmmm, I have succumbed to the new beta site and I can't seem to bring back all the old links that I have in my old blog site.

Things seems to be harder to customize, but very very newbie friendly. Unfortunately for me, my coding skills is next to zero so I am really having issues. For now, all my articles will still sport the old template until I know how to sort things out.

Rant: Yes, TagBoard is STILL out...

I know it's down, so I took it out of the Blog because it is very annoying when a popup is triggered for a site visit. It's annoying, but what can I say, they're still down and I don't know why. I am still contemplating whethere to bring it back or not. So for now, it's out. Darn!

Tech Link (Industry): HardwareZone now in PH!

I am not sure if this is really anything new, but I have been a long time visitor of HardwareZone and while I do notice the Philippine flag, I never really noticed any "specific" content targetting PH audience.

Well, it may just be me actually, maybe they have really been supporting PH but I just didn't notice it before. In any case, they have some price info there from several known PC vendors so it should be interesting on how things will turn out in the future. Maybe if resellers found out that there's a side-by-side comparison of pricing from a single site, they'll be lowering their prices to compete or worst, maybe they'll remove their pricing and just put there "call for price" hehehe. Anyway, visit the site and maybe give some feedback on how they can better support our beloved country.

Brag: My anniversary, 8months and still rolling!

Well, what do you know, I made it thru in my eight month anniversary! Looking back, I might as well continue doing this even if AMDroids continue to plague my comment section with dumb ass reply not even having a clue that I control publishing them. So yes, keep it up AMDroids, whatever suits you, go ahead and post crap, they won't go public. Again, happy 8th month anniversary to me, and let's all meet at the Mall today and chat about our favorite product. See you there..

Tech Link (Industry): E3: R.I.P.

Sad, I used to be basing my game purchase plans for the future by checking out the latest and greatest E3 reviews. While I can agree on some of the author's POV, I still feel a bit of pain for having to see this once great show end up like that, a small get together catered for select few businesspeople, and media. Anyway, if you're interested, expand and read up more.

Word on the street is top execs at leading hardware/software manufacturers – Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Electronic Arts – had finally had their fill of overspending on the event and seeing scant return on investment. The upshot: Each proceeded to then pull out of attendance, which in turn sparked a chain reaction amongst smaller publishers, who began to question their own involvement.

Brag: My 7th month anniversary

Bah, I woke up early today, around 3:30am due to a bad case of colds. Since I can't sleep anymore, I decided to check my Blog to make this anniversary post.
This simple site is getting more hits than what I intended this for, more than what I hoped for. I ended up with 25k to date, still making small splashes.

Till next, and thanks for visiting my site.

Brag: FanBoy EmotIcons!

I have just created four(4) personalized EmotIcons for the site. Of course, I made it myself, and it's a brand-spanking original concept and design. Not that it looks good, but it feels great to have my own way of conveying my feelings on each of the category that I have.

One of these EmotIcons is the one you can see besides this Blog post. It's called "Brag". The others are "Rant", "Great", and finally, "Thanks". I have always wanted to create this, but lack of time have prevented me from doing such. But now that it's done, all I can say is, "Good job" to myself.

Yeah, I know, I'm praising myself, but hey, not that you care anyway, specially if you are a sucky AMDroid. So yeah, I rock!(Hmm, maybe I'll make one about rockin')

Brag: Six Months Anniversary

Ok, this is a cheat posting, made on June 26 (Monday). But hey, I took a break from all the working and what nots and spent my day resting, looking at the sky, visiting farms, playing with my kids, talking with my wife, you know, life. Anyway, I am editing this post so I don't miss the 25th of June, the Sixth Month Anniversary of the site. So what's the news?
Well, it looks like my site is getting more and more hits, more than what I hoped for. I ended up with 22k to date, and for a FanSite with a far less audience, I'd say, I'm making some small splashes.

I'll post the graph for the hits later today, but for now, I am off to celebrate the sixth month existence of the site. Till next, and thanks for visiting my site.

Brag: Thanks for all the feedback guys!

I've been receiving tons, well not really, but many e-mails regarding my articles. I also receive "Thank-You"s for my tips and I really appreciate it a lot. I also got a few feedback from my articles, as can be seen here and here and other of my Blog entries. This type of kind words is pushing me to continue with the site even if I sometimes feel a little tired of all the FanBoyism from the other camp *yay*.

So I guess all I wanted to say is that, as long as I know I am helping people along the way, you can expect me to post an article or news bits from time to time. I can not do it most of the time, but I tried to make the site "alive" by posting at least once a day. I make sure that I give this site time, to grow, and to be shared to as many people as I can.

Again, this posting is for all of you FanBoIz like me! Thanks for checking the site, and thanks for the feedback.

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Brag: FanBoyReview reached 16,584 hits!

Woohoo! Yeehaw. Well, it's not that many, but man, a privately owned and single handledly operated website getting this number of hits is reallye exciting for me. The bulk of hits came from external forums, interestingly, not from TPC! I also got some hits coming from Google and MSN search.

But what the hey, I could care less where the hits are coming from as long as it's not my own IP bwahahahahahahaha. Anyway, I just want to say many thanks to the FanBoyz and AMDroids who are visiting this site. I have received a few hate mails, and some praises. Some are requesting to open up the comment space to make it easy to comment on.

I am thinking of indeed opening up the comment space, to make it easier to comment, but I am afraid spammers (no, not AMDroids, I mean, SPAMMERS) will post their ads or links or whatnots, that it may become a pain in the behind to clean it up. I'd rather have zero(0) comments than spending my time deleting spams.

I also received some suggestions on how to improve the site, but do note, I am just a single guy doing all these stuff! So if I can't make any changes, my apologies in advance. But rest assure that as long as I get hits like this, I'll be rolling out some info.

Thanks again, loyal visitors and haters. Without you, 16k hits would have been just a dream.

Here's hoping I'll still be up and running till next month anniversary!
