Tech Link (Processor): First Penryn (wolfdale) Numbers

metro.cl of xs managed to find a link containing numbers to early Penryn benchmarks. If you are wondering how the chip performs, then check it out. From those images in that forum link, I say it's looking good.

Ok got this link by MSN,

Here you can see a lot of screenshots, the ones without a CPU-Z by the side, specially Super Pi 1M, take it with a huge grain of salt.

Rant: ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT Performance Benchmarks

Ok, this is not a Tech Link for a reason, and it's just my random rant. I happen to stumble upon this AMDtech news bit (yes, yes, I know it's DailyTech) from XS. It is about AMD's upcoming video card, and no, that's not my rant, but before I post my rant, let me quote part of the news bits:

Onto the benchmarks. The tests were conducted on an Intel D975XBX2 BadAxe2, Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 and 2x1GB DDR2-800 MHz. The operating system on the test system was Windows XP, with a fresh install before benchmarking each card. Testing of the AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT was performed using the 8.361 Catalyst RC4 drivers, while the GeForce 8800 GTS used ForceWare 158.19 drivers.

I bolded the items which I wanted to emphasize. So here's the rant: why would AMD used a Bad Axe 2, of all the boards capable of CrossFire? And didn't ATi already have their very own chipset that supports CrossFire with an AMD CPU? Or if I am mistaken, I know there's a board for Intel that has an ATi chipset that can support Crossfire and quad core (Fatal1ty F-I90HD) so why not this one instead? And even if they really prefer i975, why not Asus for such demo?

I know that they can use anything they like, but I just find it odd that of all the possible alternatives, they end up with a competitor's board, and chipset, not to mention, processor.

Update (04/26/2007): Apparently, DailyTech is the one running the benchmark. I am really not sure, because their first paragraph is as clear as mud and can be very easily mis understood:

After several delays, AMD plans to launch its long-awaited R600 graphics processors. AMD is currently briefing select members of the press on its R600 architecture in the Tunisia, but there is no embargo date on the R600 for DailyTech -- we can show you benchmarks now.

Anyway, here's the update that makes it much clearer now:

* Our benchmarks for Half Life 2: Episode 1 showed an abnormal framerate for the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS card that scaled with lower resolutions -- we believe there was a copy error. We reran the tests this morning and achieved 119.2 frames per second with the GeForce 8800 GTS.

Tech Link (Cooler): Thermalright Ultima-90 ES vs TT120

There's a user posted review over at XS about an unreleased cooler from Thermalright. The prospects are good, and it beats Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120 soundly. Check it out and save up.

Final Remarks

The Ultima-90 has delivered some note worthy results in the two weeks spent testing. The Ultima-90, in conjunction with an e6400 is outperforming a heatsink that dwarfs it in size - why? The answer could be in the heat pipe number combined with the large amount of fins. There are 6 heatpipe coolers such as the Scythe Ninja and 45+ fin coolers like the Tuniq. The performance differential between the Ultima-90 and Tuniq appears to come from combining the two. A 48 fin cooler with 6x6mm heatpipes seems very efficient at heat dissipation. Therein is the difference, never in my searching have a found a heatsink that so densely packs the two together. Distance between the base and the bottom fins may also come into play. Heat does not have to travel long on the Ultima-90 before it reaches the lowest fins. Lastly, the Ultima-90 heatpipes converge right at the beginning and travel the breadth of the base.

For the future, I look forward to more examples of employing 7-9mm heatpipe solutions as has been done on the Enzotech Ultra-X and Thermalright IFX-14.

At this point, I have to say the Ultima-90, once delivered, should be an outstanding high performance cooler at what will probably be a reasonable price.

I'd like to thank Thermalright for sending me this engineering sample and SVC.com for sending the Tuniq out quickly and in good condition.

Many thanks also must go out to ChaosMinionX at Xtremesystems forums for helping me in the methodology of this review. I promise I will get a run of coollabs liquid pro in soon!

Tech Link (Chassis): U2-UFO Opti-1203 Red Powder Coat - Diamond Top

XS has a review posted for a neat chassis. While it does impress the reviewer, I am not a big fan of red chassis. I agree about the cooling promise and of course, roomy interior of such chassis, but the color is a great turn off for me. If you fancy a chassis of such caliber, or looking for such, expand for more and read more about it.

Introduction

Tech Link (Industry); DDR3 mobos will ship in mid 2007

XS member, metroc.cl, has shared info that DDR3 mobos will ship in midyear. Earlier, he posted a DDR3-based mobo and in this current posting, he is now showing some DDR3 modules.

If you are wondering what benefit DDR3 would bring, I suggest reading up an article over at LostCircuits. I suggest you guys review this link, though it's been quite dated already (and focusing on GDDR3). Expand for more...

Hello Guys,
i just got info from supertalent that DDR3 motherboard will start shipping in mid 2007, that DDR3 wont be pin compatible with DDR2.

Also they already have finished prototypes of DDR3 they are testing the in several mobos now.

All this info will be public tomorrow when ST releases their newsletter, if you want to sign up in supertalents newsletter, check their home page and you have to look at the right side

Tech Link (PSU): Enermax Galaxy DXX 1000w Quad Extreme

I know this posting is late, but I figure my similar power supply is due to arrive at the end of the month. I am certainly sure that I won't be able to tell for myself if it indeed is living up to the promise of its capacity, since that will definitely make a big dent on my electric bill. However, knowing this PSU passed the high requirements of FUGGER, XS owner, then I am quite sure this PSU will not let me down. Check it out...

Comdex 2003, my display rig in the Abit booth had a heart attack firing up at 4.4Ghz and the PSU was dead. I tracked back out onto the show floor and found Tom @ Enermax who said sure my 450w power supply could handle the situation, so he gave the the PSU in good faith and I hauled it back to the Abit booth with Tom in tow and snapped it like a twig. Whoops, so we go back out the Enermax booth and grab the biggest supply they had at the show, it was a 651w model that worked great for the entire duration of the show.

Well as luck would have it this year at CES we ran into power supply problems again with a 1Kw single rail from another popular manufacture failed to post on the bench rig.

Tech Link (CPU): Conroe E6850 on Air, stability test with Ultra_Low_Volt. ^_^

XS member VictorWang has posted an early benchmark of this amazing CPU. This is an unreleased CPU from Intel and according to the screenshot, this CPU will run at 3GHz. Noticing the max multiplier on CPU-Z, it is easy to deduce that PSB (processor system bus) will be at 333MHz (1333MHz QPB).

It looks like this processor is already validated on Asus motherboard because Asus released a BIOS for their Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard last week of January, with description that reads:

P5B Deluxe Release BIOS 1004
**Please update AsusUpdate to V7.09.02 or later prior making this update.**
**This BIOS does not support roll back to older BIOS**
1 Enhance memory compatibility
2 Support CONROE E0 CPU(FSB 1333)

It is interesting that this processoe runs at a very low voltage, further testament to Intel's commitment to making processors faster yet consuming less power than their previous generation uA. And the high FSB seems to suggest that it'll attain insane FSB overclocks, higher than we've seen from E6000 series. Looks like it's going to be even more interesting this year.

been tooo busy these days, finally got some time playing with new chips.
Conroe E6850es
Stepping 9 = E0

all my E6850es in hand don't like much volts.
defult vcore=1.22~1.24v
< 1.48v maybe the best for E6850.
but...seems overclks better.
max fsb on Air = 533~570.
can we say: E6850 is better than E6600 ?

test results bellow are not the same chip

Tech Link (Motherboard): Never mind Striker bring on Commando

Seems like Tony (of OCZ) have finally agreed that 680i isn't necessary = best performance. I'd only get this for "certified SLI" support for current and future high end video cards, I'll always go for Chipzilla chipsets for everything else aside from SLI. I really wish Chipzilla will finally close a deal with NVIDIA* so that i975 will have SLI support without the hacked drivers. It's just a matter of driver/chipset identification to enable SLI rather than technological limitation (yes, for the uber anal, chipset and driver is part of the technology, but duh).

In any case, over at TechRepository, Tony has posted some really neat screenshots of the BIOS and he seems to have lotsa fun testing. I went to XS and I also saw his post. His header is much cooler there than what is posted on their persnal Tech Blog, so that's why I used his "Never mind Striker bring on Commando" title. Enjoy!

All the excitement about DFI had me forgetting another board which i will be testing over the next few weeks. Asus have released what could possibly be the finest i965 board we will see. Codenamed commando the board is part of the ROG line of boards which also have crosshair and Strker extreme as members.

I have the board and can say I have not yet tested a board that overclocks DDR2 better than this one, if you want to run 1300+DDR this is the board for you

Voltage options are nothing short of stunning, i will post screen shots in the next 24hrs so sit tight. Tests to come in the nex week or so.

1 pic for your enjoyment, you may see others posted as Asus gave a sneek peek of the board here in taiwan at the 1st OCZ Overclocking summit.

Tech Link (Processor): Intel X3220: LGA775 quad-core Xeon power

I am not in the mood today, but that doesn't mean I am not going to post some really juicy bits. FCG grab hold of a really neat toy, a server CPU but base on Socket T/LGA775 so it fits nicely on regular desktop board.

He tested it on a i965-based motherboard and as per his post, the performance is great. He even overclocked the baby and hits 4GHz. Now that's really amazing, four (4) cores on 4GHz. Maybe I should begin posting my server pets as well. Expand for more and check out FCG's toys.

If you haven't heard by now, Intel will be releasing a Socket T (LGA775) quad-core Xeon during Q1 2007. This chip will be identical to the Kentsfield, save the name string, and the dual processor (DP) ready Clovertown except for one small difference. Binning. Expect the Xeon flavored "Kentsfields" to run cooler and with less voltage than their desktop system brotheren.

Here's the expected lineup:
X3210 - 2.13GHz, 2x4MB L2, 1066MHz FSB
X3220 - 2.40GHz, 2x4MB L2, 1066Mhz FSB
X3230 - 2.66GHz, 2x4MB L2, 1066MHz FSB
X3240 - 3.00GHz, 2x4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB

Price should be very similar to Kentsfield, where the X3220 is the equivalent of the Q6600 and the X3230 matches the QX6700. As you can see, these CPUs are the newer B3 stepping. Expect this to be the retail revision when these particular CPUs appear for sale in early 2007.

Here's what CPU-Z shows for the X3220 running on my watercooled Asus P5B. Although this screen shot shows a modest 400FSB I've had no problems with 450x8 with this combination. I prefer to run the lower FSB though as I can use a 4:5 memory divider to reach DDR-1000 quite easily.

Tech Link (Processor): OPB's 3rd attempt got super pi 1m 8.906s and new pifast wr

I would have not posted it but I just checked the link again and it seems that some folks over at XS are doubting this new WR. If you are fond of running SuperPi benches, there's a lot discussion on how OPB was able to improve his score. Go check it out, and maybe, pitch in your thoughts. Me? I don't doubt the score, it's a Chipzilla CPU, it must be good, yay!

Let me share with you guys, LN2 playing is really hard job, I am only one person, and I need to watch temp, take picture, and capture windows benchmark screeny....how many hands I have? lol...

here we go, finally reached sub 9 as super pi 1m 8.906...

really tired, and out of LN2...will keep 8m and 32m challenge next time.

This will be the same for the Conway, Captin Insano.

Brag: Kinc and crotale sets a new 3DMark 2001 world record with 89,120 points

Well, it's not surprising anymore with the power of Chipzilla processor. The world reknown overclockers Kinc and crotale managed to break the 3DMark2001 world record with such blazing score. It seems that the race to 90k is on!

Even if the weekend is still young our OC gurus Robert 'crotale' Kihlberg and Marcus 'Kinc' Hultin have already managed to score a new world record. With 3DMark 2001 they've managed to reach 89,120 points. It might be worth mentioning that the system still needs some tweaking for optimal performance and that the CPU is still our tired ol' X6800. However, now they've managed to get above 5GHz at least, while they also used a X1950/X1900 combo, waiting for another X1950 card without too bad coldbugs. Unfortunately, it's still impossible to raise the memory frequency of the X1950 very much, but that shouldn't stop them from reaching 90,000 later on.
