Ultimately the Asus Arctic Square heatsink is a good lower noise thermal solution with the capability of handling higher heat loads from modern day multi-core processors, or for adequately cooling single core chips from either AMD or Intel. Its bulky shape may prevent it from being used with some motherboards that have large heatsinks mounted to the MOSFETs or northbridge, but otherwise the Asus Arctic Square heatsink is easily recommendable.
A few days ago we posted a review of the new cooling solution from OCZ Technology – OCZ Vindicator. If you have read the article you remember that we stressed several times the resemblance between this solution and another popular cooling product – Ninja cooler from Scythe Company. The same feedback comes from many users who have had a chance to compare these two solutions.
Today we were contacted by Scythe representative, Andreas Bunen, who provided us with the official statement regarding the above mentioned resemblance that confuses reviewers and users. Here it is:
"Scythe is a stock holder of the factory where we produce our coolers, and also the factory is a stock holder of the Scythe Taiwan office where we have a very tight relationship almost as close as a group company. Within this relationship we are acknowledged and aware of all shipments done from the factory. But OCZ is not one of them. With the above said, we are definitely sure that OCZ coolers are manufactured in another factory. The only components that are common between the two are the hex caps on the heat pipes, which are supplied outside of our cooler factory.
We also have not approved OCZ's design in any form or shape, nor did we receive any OEM request. Their products are just a simple copy of Ninja and we are currently being troubled by this untrue rumor."
As we see, Scythe Company denies any relation between Vindicator and Ninja claiming that OCZ has copied the design of their successful solution. Of course, we couldn’t help asking OCZ Technology to comment in return. Here is what Alex Mei, Executive VP and CMO of OPCZ Technology Group had to say:
"The OCZ Vindicator is in no way affiliated with the Scythe offering, and makes use of our own designed fin array to deliver another option for consumers. We make use of our own expertise in thermal design and have created an enlarged array providing more surface area. The Vindicator is produced at a completely separate manufacturing facility as the competitor offering, and done so to our own set of exacting standards. In the future you can expect many more enthusiast cooling solutions that will be increasingly differentiated, and even make use of patented technologies."
As this comment suggests, OCZ did use Ninja design as a basis having introduced slight modifications to it. Nevertheless, Scythe seems to be reacting very calmly to this matter. Both coolers are of similar efficiency and are currently selling at comparable prices.
You can read more on their practical performance in our review called OCZ Vindicator CPU Cooler Review: When the Copy is As Good As the Original.

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme NEWS Release
In 2006, Thermalright released the Ultra-120 and ever since then it's been classified as one of the top air cooling heatsinks for many high end systems. With its large cooling capacity, vast compatibility across multiple platforms, and easy installation; it's easy to see why. But at Thermalright, it's never our intention to stop when success has been reached, so we keep pushing the envelope. In 2007, Intel and AMD came out with new quad core CPUs and our response? Ultra-120 eXtreme!!
Ultra-120 eXtreme inherited all the advantages of its predecessor and increased its ability to absorb heat faster and better by having 6 heatpipes. It doesn't matter which processor you use; a Socket 775 processor (single core, Core 2 Extreme or Core 2 Quad) there is nothing our Ultra-120 eXtreme cannot handle. Of course, that also applies to all Socket AM2 processors. Just as for Intel platforms, the Ultra-120 eXtreme also includes spring loaded bolt screws to ensure a tight and secure heatsink installation on the socket.
In addition, we took care of the concerns expressed by our users in regards to Ultra-120 backplate. For the eXtreme version, we added a non-conductive plastic padding to shield all electrical contact in preventing a short circuitry. So go ahead and choose any type of motherboard you want; whether chips by Intel or Nvidia's 680i series. It is sure to be safe with Ultra-120 eXtreme.
Right before this formal announcement of Ultra-120 eXtreme, it was tested by one of the most revered hardware sites as they validated our claim that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars when the Ultra-120 eXtreme can cool your CPU just as good, if not better, than your average water-cooling system.
So you think your current heatsink cooler has reached its limit? Thinking about switching to water cooling? Before you do anything, test out an Ultra-120 eXtreme. You will see that records are meant to be broken as new records and standards are set.
Thermalright HR-09 NEWS
As many hardware enthusiasts would know, there are three major heat sources from your computer system; CPU, north and south bridge chipset, and PWN-IC which is also known as MOSFET.
The increasing density of MOSFETs on an integrated circuit is creating problems of localized heat generation that can impair circuit operation. Circuits operate slower at high temperatures, and have reduced reliability and shorter lifetimes. MOSFETs are at risk of thermal runaway. As their on-state resistance rises with temperature, the power loss on the junction rises correspondingly, generating further heat resulting in destruction of the device.
For the above reasons, many motherboards now have their own heatpipe cooling system designed by the motherboard manufacturers. But during our research test, we found out that the northbridge chipset can run especially hot and when you increase voltage, the temperature increased many times over. The heatpipe cooling system just does not have enough surface area to cool those hot devices equally AND sufficiently.
Many end-users also have written to us in regards to the above issue. They got tired of gimmicks and low grade thermal solutions. What they needed was something real, something that actually cools the MOSFET, and so we went to work and developed a new product called HR-09 (from High-Riser series) MOSFET cooler.
The HR-09 MOSFET cooler with its patented design will expand your system’s life expectancy and creates a stable condition not only during normal operation but also when you increase the frequency and voltage to overclock. Now heat is no more an issue.
The HR-09 comes in two distinctive designs and types (sold separately); HR-09U and HR-09S. The difference lies in positioning and orientation of the fins and heatpipe. For HR-09U, which fits most major motherboards, sits upright. It is the choice when you have no obstacles to hinder the installation of HR-09U. As for HR-09S, which sits at a slant angle, would be the choice when you have a big CPU heatsink such as the SI-128 and have limited space on your motherboard. But whatever the choice you make between HR-09U and HR-09S, know that you have nothing but the best quality and performance…now working for your MOSFET.
Conclusion
Our today’s tests indicate that overclockers have got another very effective and very quiet air cooler. The Cooler Master GeminII is already selling at a price not much different from the recommended one.
There are only two drawbacks about the new product: no fans included into the package and its limited compatibility with mainboards for AMD processors. The former drawback can be solved easily, but the latter is more serious. I hope the manufacturer will perfect the Socket AM2/939 fastening in such a way that the cooler could be oriented on the CPU socket in the best possible position.
Big weight? It’s not a problem as the GeminII uses threaded fastening through the mainboard which just can be more reliable. The mainboard has to be taken out of the system case to install the cooler, but you have to do the same with every super-cooler, except for Scythe’s (but I should add that the GeminII lacks a back-plate for LGA775 and the mainboard bends under the pressure). Size? The cooler fits into the system case perfectly and does not press against the components around the CPU socket. It does not exhaust hot air outside, but its design just doesn’t imply that.
The rest are indisputable advantages. The GeminII is highly effective and very quiet. It cools the near-socket space on the mainboard. It is not more expensive than its opponents, even including the cost of two fans. And it is already available for purchase! Very good news!
Where could the GeminII progress further? I would suggest the following:
* Remove the top rigidity bars from the fan plate to reduce resistance to airflow
* To reduce the same resistance more, the top edge of the ribbing could be made serrated
* Include fans into the package by default, perhaps fans with speed adjustment up to 2500rpm (this would please an extreme overclocker, but would be useless for those who choose silence)
* Make the heat pipes the same diameter as in the Enzotech Ultra-X (and perhaps use fewer of them)
* Polish the base better
So, I think there is still some work Cooler Master’s engineers might do to make this super-cooler even better than it currently is.
Final Remarks
The Ultima-90 has delivered some note worthy results in the two weeks spent testing. The Ultima-90, in conjunction with an e6400 is outperforming a heatsink that dwarfs it in size - why? The answer could be in the heat pipe number combined with the large amount of fins. There are 6 heatpipe coolers such as the Scythe Ninja and 45+ fin coolers like the Tuniq. The performance differential between the Ultima-90 and Tuniq appears to come from combining the two. A 48 fin cooler with 6x6mm heatpipes seems very efficient at heat dissipation. Therein is the difference, never in my searching have a found a heatsink that so densely packs the two together. Distance between the base and the bottom fins may also come into play. Heat does not have to travel long on the Ultima-90 before it reaches the lowest fins. Lastly, the Ultima-90 heatpipes converge right at the beginning and travel the breadth of the base.
For the future, I look forward to more examples of employing 7-9mm heatpipe solutions as has been done on the Enzotech Ultra-X and Thermalright IFX-14.
At this point, I have to say the Ultima-90, once delivered, should be an outstanding high performance cooler at what will probably be a reasonable price.
I'd like to thank Thermalright for sending me this engineering sample and SVC.com for sending the Tuniq out quickly and in good condition.
Many thanks also must go out to ChaosMinionX at Xtremesystems forums for helping me in the methodology of this review. I promise I will get a run of coollabs liquid pro in soon!

Sunnyvale, CA—February 20, 2007—OCZ Technology Group, Inc. a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory, today announced the OCZ Vindicator CPU cooler, an enthusiast-grade thermal solution for the latest high performance processors. The Vindicator can be used as a passive or active cooler depending on the needs of the enthusiast.
The OCZ Vindicator can effectively cool some CPUs passively thanks to a pure copper base plate and six copper heat pipe design that rapidly transfers heat away from the processor up to the dense, high-stacked fin array where the thermal load is quickly dissipated. In fanless mode, the Vindicator efficiently, yet silently offloads heat. For extreme overclocking, enthusiasts can simply attach the included 120mm fan on any of the four sides of the Vindicator to aggressively cool the CPU.
“We are excited to expand our thermal solutions with the introduction of a CPU cooler designed specifically for hardcore gamers and enthusiasts,” said Jacky Huang, VP of Product Management, OCZ Technology. “The Vindicator’s six copper heatpipes and high-stacked fin array push the envelope when it comes to superior cooling while overclocking, and give enthusiasts increased flexibility with the passive or active fan configuration.”
The versatile OCZ Vindicator CPU cooler is compatible with sockets AMD 754/939/AM2 and Intel 775. Because no motherboard back plate is required, the hassle-free Vindicator is installed quickly and easily. With no need to remove your motherboard to install the cooler, the OCZ Vindicator will have your CPU cooled in no time.
Light-weight and quiet, the OCZ Vindicator manages to provide superior and reliable cooling thanks to a unique and state-of-the-art design for enthusiasts looking to upgrade their generic or inadequate coolers.

Conclusion
Trying to kill two birds with one stone, Cooler Master hit neither. The new cooling system has two good points: universality (it supports all the modern CPUs and GPUs) and low price. The rest are all drawbacks that outweigh the mentioned advantages by a large margin.
The failure of the Aquagate Viva comes from its design that implies that its heatsink and fans must be placed inside the PC case. Abandoning an expansion tank to make the system compact, the manufacturer endowed it with one more defect, a very small amount of coolant. The heatsink is small to achieve the compactness and, probably, to provide for several variants of installation and is also made of aluminum to reduce the cost. As a result, the two roaring 70mm fans can’t cool it efficiently and provide performance that would be at least acceptable for overclocking.
So, it’s good the Christmas holidays are already behind – no one is likely to present you the Aquagate Viva as a gift!
Conclusive Thoughts
All in all the results of the Thermalright HR-07 are extremely good, this cooler really makes an additional fan to blow over your memory unnecessary, or alternatively, can make you cool your ram to new extends, for even higher overclock results.
The only real drawback of the cooler is the fact that the standard heat spreaders of your memory have to be removed before you can possibly install the HR-07. This not only voids the warranty of your memory, but is a hassle to do as well, and you seriously risk damaging your memory sticks when you're not careful.
Therefore I applaud Thermalright's efforts to bring the coolers to the memory manufacturers as an OEM part, as I think these coolers can certainly help to bring your memory to the next level. But then again, if you're into memory overclocking, or if you're a modding enthusiast and got some older ram without heat spreaders lying around, or if you don't mind taking them off, you should really have a look at the new Thermalright offering.
Price wise the new HR-07 can be had for around $25 (froogle), which is not very cheap as you'll need to buy two for dual channel operation. On the other hand, after market, simple heat spreaders used to cost $10-$15 as well, and a fan would set you back another $10.
In the end, here's my take on the Thermaltake HR-07 memory cooler:
+ Excellent passive cooling performance compared to standard solutions
+ Brings active cooling performance to the next level
+ An "extreme" look that should appeal to case modders
+ Easy installation (once you get the old HSP's off)
+ Excellent quality and finish
- Not very cheap (around $50 for dual channel kit)
- Possible clearance issues with large CPU coolers
- Risk of damaging and voiding warranty of your memory when removing the stock HSP

Thermaltake Bigwater 745 Performance
If you are a hardcore overclocker, liquid cooling systems from the likes of Danger Den and other manufacturers will likely offer higher performance for your needs. However, for casual overlclockers and those looking to make their systems quieter the Thermaltake Bigwater 745 is an excellent option. The heat/sink fan combo I was using prior to the Bigwater was a high performance unit from Zalman called the Fatal1ty for the LGA775 Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 CPU I use in my system.
At idle with default CPU settings on the Zalman fan my system ran 35C degrees with ambient room temps at about 80F(a bit under 27C). With the same ambient temps in the room the Thermaltake Bigwater 745 kept the Core 2 Extreme at 28C idle temp. That is a bit over one degree higher than room temp. Under full load with looping 3DMark06 runs going the Zalman fan kept the CPU at 48C. Bigwater kept the CPU at 41C under full load with the same 3DMark06 loop running. Note: All temps were taken with the Abit uGuru panel via the built in temp probes on the board.
Verdict
Good performing liquid cooling system with no glaring issued during install other than not having enough coolant included. The components are of good quality and the system will work with most current CPUs. The system components are large, be prepared for creative installation and possibly having to mod your chassis to fit the system inside the case. Hardcore overclockers may want to shop elsewhere, but the majority of liquid cooling users will find the system to be great for typical needs and much better than high performance air cooling. Great performance for cost sets the Bigwater 745 apart from its peers.
The Scythe SCINF-1000 is a huge cooler. Scythe themselves have a huge reputation to live up to. Will the Scythe Infinity match that reputation and perform well when used with a Conroe CPU? I take it to the test in the following review and see how it fares.
Scythe have made quite an impression of late in the cooling market. Their line of CPU coolers are really (pardon the pun) "hotting up" the heatsink market. With some great designs and more than a couple of heatpipes, enthusiasts are really digging what Scythe are all about.
