In 2006, Thermalright released the Ultra-120 and ever since then it's been classified as one of the top air cooling heatsinks for many high end systems. With its large cooling capacity, vast compatibility across multiple platforms, and easy installation; it's easy to see why. But at Thermalright, it's never our intention to stop when success has been reached, so we keep pushing the envelope. In 2007, Intel and AMD came out with new quad core CPUs and our response? Ultra-120 eXtreme inherited all the advantages of its predecessor and increased its ability to absorb heat faster and better by having 6 heatpipes. It doesn't matter which processor you use; a Socket 775 processor (single core, Core 2 Extreme or Core 2 Quad) there is nothing our Ultra-120 eXtreme cannot handle. Thermalright HR-09 NEWS

As many hardware enthusiasts would know, there are three major heat sources from your computer system; CPU, north and south bridge chipset, and PWN-IC which is also known as MOSFET.

The increasing density of MOSFETs on an integrated circuit is creating problems of localized heat generation that can impair circuit operation. Circuits operate slower at high temperatures, and have reduced reliability and shorter lifetimes. MOSFETs are at risk of thermal runaway. As their on-state resistance rises with temperature, the power loss on the junction rises correspondingly, generating further heat resulting in destruction of the device.

For the above reasons, many motherboards now have their own heatpipe cooling system designed by the motherboard manufacturers. But during our research test, we found out that the northbridge chipset can run especially hot and when you increase voltage, the temperature increased many times over. The heatpipe cooling system just does not have enough surface area to cool those hot devices equally AND sufficiently.

Many end-users also have written to us in regards to the above issue. They got tired of gimmicks and low grade thermal solutions. What they needed was something real, something that actually cools the MOSFET, and so we went to work and developed a new product called HR-09 (from High-Riser series) MOSFET cooler.

The HR-09 MOSFET cooler with its patented design will expand your system’s life expectancy and creates a stable condition not only during normal operation but also when you increase the frequency and voltage to overclock. Now heat is no more an issue.

The HR-09 comes in two distinctive designs and types (sold separately); HR-09U and HR-09S. The difference lies in positioning and orientation of the fins and heatpipe. For HR-09U, which fits most major motherboards, sits upright. It is the choice when you have no obstacles to hinder the installation of HR-09U. As for HR-09S, which sits at a slant angle, would be the choice when you have a big CPU heatsink such as the SI-128 and have limited space on your motherboard. But whatever the choice you make between HR-09U and HR-09S, know that you have nothing but the best quality and performance…now working for your MOSFET.

Tech Link (Cooler): Thermalright Ultima-90 ES vs TT120

There's a user posted review over at XS about an unreleased cooler from Thermalright. The prospects are good, and it beats Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120 soundly. Check it out and save up.



Final Remarks

The Ultima-90 has delivered some note worthy results in the two weeks spent testing. The Ultima-90, in conjunction with an e6400 is outperforming a heatsink that dwarfs it in size - why? The answer could be in the heat pipe number combined with the large amount of fins. There are 6 heatpipe coolers such as the Scythe Ninja and 45+ fin coolers like the Tuniq. The performance differential between the Ultima-90 and Tuniq appears to come from combining the two. A 48 fin cooler with 6x6mm heatpipes seems very efficient at heat dissipation. Therein is the difference, never in my searching have a found a heatsink that so densely packs the two together. Distance between the base and the bottom fins may also come into play. Heat does not have to travel long on the Ultima-90 before it reaches the lowest fins. Lastly, the Ultima-90 heatpipes converge right at the beginning and travel the breadth of the base.

For the future, I look forward to more examples of employing 7-9mm heatpipe solutions as has been done on the Enzotech Ultra-X and Thermalright IFX-14.

At this point, I have to say the Ultima-90, once delivered, should be an outstanding high performance cooler at what will probably be a reasonable price.

I'd like to thank Thermalright for sending me this engineering sample and SVC.com for sending the Tuniq out quickly and in good condition.

Preview: Thermalright IFX-14 CPU Cooler

I am not sure why there's no press release yet on this one, nor do I see any rumors floating around, but it would seem that Thermalright* has an upcoming CPU heatsink.

You can view the technical specifications here but no official information is posted on the main site. Anyway, here's the tech specs for the lazy clickers (I added some emphasis).

Tech Link (Cooler): Thermalright HR-07 Memory Cooler Review

Insane Crustaceans have posted a short review of Thermalright*'s memory cooler which I posted sometime ago. I think these are just for looks rather than performance, so I agree with the award that they extended to the device. Read up to check out what reward it is.



Conclusive Thoughts
All in all the results of the Thermalright HR-07 are extremely good, this cooler really makes an additional fan to blow over your memory unnecessary, or alternatively, can make you cool your ram to new extends, for even higher overclock results.

The only real drawback of the cooler is the fact that the standard heat spreaders of your memory have to be removed before you can possibly install the HR-07. This not only voids the warranty of your memory, but is a hassle to do as well, and you seriously risk damaging your memory sticks when you're not careful.

Therefore I applaud Thermalright's efforts to bring the coolers to the memory manufacturers as an OEM part, as I think these coolers can certainly help to bring your memory to the next level. But then again, if you're into memory overclocking, or if you're a modding enthusiast and got some older ram without heat spreaders lying around, or if you don't mind taking them off, you should really have a look at the new Thermalright offering.

Price wise the new HR-07 can be had for around $25 (froogle), which is not very cheap as you'll need to buy two for dual channel operation. On the other hand, after market, simple heat spreaders used to cost $10-$15 as well, and a fan would set you back another $10.

In the end, here's my take on the Thermaltake HR-07 memory cooler:

+ Excellent passive cooling performance compared to standard solutions
+ Brings active cooling performance to the next level
+ An "extreme" look that should appeal to case modders
+ Easy installation (once you get the old HSP's off)
+ Excellent quality and finish
- Not very cheap (around $50 for dual channel kit)
- Possible clearance issues with large CPU coolers
- Risk of damaging and voiding warranty of your memory when removing the stock HSP

Tech Link (Cooler): Thermaltake Spirit RS

It would have been a Press Release kind of posting, but it seems that Thermalright* has nothing to "announce" about their newly released product.

The new product is a memory cooler, with heatpipe and fins. It reminds me of the newly released Thermalright HR-07 RAM Cooler. Anyway, both of them looked cool, but I prefer the Thermalright one because of the all-silver (or nickel?) themed cooler.

This will render some of those over-the-ram-fan coolers somehow, well, obsolete. The question is, is it really needed on typical memory overclock. I guess if you're the type who likes putting more than 2.4v on your DDR2 or has a knack for anything heatpipe with fins, this one will satisfy that hunger.

Press Release: HR-07 RAM Cooler New Release

Better late than never, I thought I have posted this during the Holiday season but I guess I just missed it. Anyway, Thermalright has a very interesting cooler on their line-up, and it's not for the CPU, GPU, and chipset. It's for the memory!!! Yep, for your RAM. I don't know people are going to cool their RAM that comes with heatspreader though, but for bare-naked RAM, and if you like to put more "bling" to it, then this should fit the need (but I am not sure if it will fit the bill). At the height of advanced technology with computer parts and devices getting hotter and hotter you might not know this but when you increase the voltage and frequency during overclocking, you not only increase the speed and performance of you computer but you also increased a mass of heat created inside your computer case and that includes the heat coming from your memory modules. That temperature increase alone can be as much as 10 degree Celsius. Added to the total of increased heat, your computer case could contain 60 degree Celsius or above!

Some memory module manufacturer tried to cool that part of the equation by putting heat spreaders on those memory modules. But experts would know this: the heat gathered by the heat spreader has no where to go and the constant heat coming from the memory chips would render the heat spreaders to be useless. They do not have much cooling effect except for visual effects with fancy LED and cool company logos but that's about it.

Tech Link (Cooler): Thermalright Gets Back on Top with the Ultra-120

Well, you got to really love Thermalright* for their blatant FanBoyism. I mean, they touted that they are number one, the best, top dog! I just loved their marketing claim, truly a sign of uber FanBoyism like me, yay! And yep, I ordered two already wohooo!

There have been many commendable contenders for the top spot as number one heatsink manufacturer…some came close and one or two may have succeeded in claiming the top honor for that one brief shiny moment but no more~!

The arrival of a new product at Thermalright is always interesting for those which seek the best cooler for their processor.
It missed, in the current range of the products Thermalright, a passive solution of cooling for CPU. Here are which is made with the HR-01-775!
One understands by liability, a radiator able to evacuate the heat of the processor without requiring the use of a ventilator. Attention, this type of configuration counts all the same on a flow of sufficient air inside your case. For example, a ventilator in frontage which brings fresh air and a second with the back which evacuates the hot air. It is inconceivable to install a passive radiator on your processor without to have thought of that.

Press Release: Thermalright announce the new HR-01-775 for LGA775 Processor

If you have been keeping tabs on the cooler arena, you'll know that the newest Thermalright* cooler for Intel® processor was baptized on the Intel® Xeon® Processor (an SI-9XV). Well, seems like Thermalright* finally heed our cries and brought a new outstanding cooler for the more mainstream processor. Hey, who among you normally owns a server-based motherboard and processor (ssshhhh, I know I have three(3))...

HR-01-775 News Release

Due to higher processor frequency enabling computers to run even more intensive business, multimedia, and gaming applications, the LGA775 processor has been known to generate more heat than any other processors in the CPU market. As any PC enthusiasts would know, stability and heat control go hand-in-hand when it comes to building a good quality PC. Intel made a valiant effort in making a semi-efficient heatsink for the LGA775 processor, but let’s face it...it just does not cut it! In response to more heat generated by the CPU, the fan RPM turns up higher and higher which translates into louder and louder noise. Can your ears bare the noise?

That’s where third-party heatsink designer/maker comes in. The challenge was to find better solutions in cooling the scorcher in the LGA775 core, plus with minimal noise from the CPU cooling fan. Once again, Thermalright has stepped up to take that challenge and introduced the HR-01-775*.

HR-01-775 is a passive tower cooler that utilizes the fan that is already installed in your computer. It works side by side with the fan duct system developed exclusively by Thermalright. Basically, the fan duct connects the HR-01 to the 120mm outtake fan, thus making the heatsink serve as a portal to the wind tunnel that leads to the outside environment of the computer, effectively pulling out hot air and cooling the HR-01 (designed with its proprietary through holes for efficient ventilation) at the same time. Press Release: Thermalright HR-01 Passive Cooling

Oh, my brat clients would probably be drooling about this cooler once I get my early samples next year. I'll be stocking a few, and keep one myself, well, that is if reviews proved it to be better than my XP-90 which has stood me the test of time due to easy installation, good performance, and light-weight design. Screw those after-market coolers that require you to remove the motherboard.


People who live in densely populated areas, such as Manhattan or Hong Kong deal with the need to expand without the land to do it, but expand they do. How do they do it? Hint: Think upwards. Yes, those high rise buildings! If you can't expand horizontally, you go vertically!! That means up, up, up!

With that in mind, we applied the same principle to our newest product. It is designed to work on any AMD S754/939/940, Intel Socket 478, and Intel LGA775 systems.

Introducing the new HR-01

The HR-01 follows our classic tradition of Light N Easy. It's light in that it's only 520g without a fan. It's easy in that you don't need to take out your motherboard to install, or uninstall any part of your computer setup. But that is not the best part! For those of you who cannot stand the noise produced by howling cooling fans, you will definitely love this. It works as a passive cooling system. That means no fan! And no fan equals any noise produced by your CPU cooler.

What about performance?

Due to the greater surface area and to the newly developed, proprietary ventilation design, the HR-01 is able to absorb more heat and dissipates it more efficiently, with good case cooling and case housekeeping than most of other high-end passive coolers in the market.
