Tech LInk? (PSU): Miller Electric 10,000W Power Supply Review

Up until one of the resistive load banks overheated and caught fire, the PSU produced stellar load regulation on all of the outputs across a broad range of loads; even when delivering 2,500 watts of DC power.

Oh @#$%! That’s not good! Fire-Fire-Fire! Well, turn it off, turn it off! These are a few of the thoughts that flashed thru my mind as I reached for the fire extinguisher…

Unfortunately, that concluded our testing on the XMT 300 PC power supply…

Tech Link (PSU): OCZ ProXStream 1kw OCZ1000PXS ATX PSU

If you have a monster rig and looking to improve your PSU, then OC3D might have something that will fit your needs. The author is happy with it, except he believes it's a little pricey for its worth. Check it out...



Conclusion

The OCZ ProXStream 1000w is a great looking unit with stable voltages all the way up to 886w and quite possibly beyond. The tweakers among us will be delighted to see that the ProXStream has internal pots that can be used for fine tuning the output voltages (providing you can remove the anti-tamper glue), and with an efficiency of over 81% the unit should also appeal to those who are looking to save valuable pennies on their energy bills.

Unfortunately due to the way that the ProXStream is crammed with two levels of circuits, the unit gets very hot. To counteract this OCZ have installed a high-cfm 80mm fan that unfortunately can only be described as a leaf blower when running at full speed.

If noise isn't a factor in your next PSU purchase, then the OCZ ProXStream can be found over at SpecialTech or Tekheads retailing for around £195. This is rather expensive considering the minimalistic package you get when compared with other 1kw power supplies on the market, and personally I was expecting it to be at least £20-30 cheaper.

Update 04/03/07
We have been informed that the OCZ ProXStream 1kw has been reduced in price by £20 over at SpecialTech. This brings the retail price down to £175 making the ProXStream far more competitive in the 1kw market. For this reason, the price sub-score has been increased from 7 to 8.

• Great looking electroplated finish.
• Sleeved cables and easy grip molex connectors.
• Good efficiency at medium and high load levels.
• Fairly stable voltages when tested up to 886w.
• Standard sized ATX casing. Suitable for all PC's.
• Adjustable pots for tweaking voltage output.

Con's
• Very noisy even with 0% load.
• Unit gets hot under heavy load.
• +5v rail results could have been better.

Tech Link (PSU): Enermax Galaxy DXX 1000w Quad Extreme

I know this posting is late, but I figure my similar power supply is due to arrive at the end of the month. I am certainly sure that I won't be able to tell for myself if it indeed is living up to the promise of its capacity, since that will definitely make a big dent on my electric bill. However, knowing this PSU passed the high requirements of FUGGER, XS owner, then I am quite sure this PSU will not let me down. Check it out...



Comdex 2003, my display rig in the Abit booth had a heart attack firing up at 4.4Ghz and the PSU was dead. I tracked back out onto the show floor and found Tom @ Enermax who said sure my 450w power supply could handle the situation, so he gave the the PSU in good faith and I hauled it back to the Abit booth with Tom in tow and snapped it like a twig. Whoops, so we go back out the Enermax booth and grab the biggest supply they had at the show, it was a 651w model that worked great for the entire duration of the show.

Well as luck would have it this year at CES we ran into power supply problems again with a 1Kw single rail from another popular manufacture failed to post on the bench rig.

Tech Link (Power Supply): be quiet! 750W & 850W Dark Power Pro PSU Review

VH isn't my favorite site due to their massive advertisement, but hey, most tech sites are as well, but that's besides the point. They have posted a review of two PSUs that are badly needed nowadays because of high end video cards. Intel have improved power consumption on their processors and chipsets, but video card manufacturers are demanding more and more, so if you are planning to get a new PSU, check out the short and neat review. Conclusion:
What a solid performer, and doing so quietly! The finish on the enclosure is one of my favorites. The modular cable system is over the top. The cables are of sufficient length, and in some smaller cases, even too long, but the folks with servers cases or even companies with a server setup will love the extra long cables. Onto the interior, which is laid out well and not crammed with parts. Everything is spaced nicely and should allow for proper airflow over the components.

One thing I wasn't happy with on the inside was how the wires were soldered to the modular plug board. Some of the connections look like they could have been seated better to the circuit board. On the positive side to the plugs themselves, they were all soldered properly and felt solid. What else felt solid was how well the modular plug board was attached to the chassis of the power supply, and the nuts holding it in place had glue on them to prevent them from coming loose.

During the testing, each Dark Power Pro PSU tested the same. They each got 342 watts of load put to several of the rails. The power supply barely got warm and provided this power effortlessly. Since the power supplies are basically the same except for the wattage, I can recommend either one for a dual video card setup.

Also these power supplies have been Nvidia SLI and ATI CrossFire approved. You may prefer to get the 850W if you are going with a quad GPU setup, just to have the extra headroom. For the server folks, grab either one of the these PSU's; you're also gonna love the long cables and the plethora of connections. I would like to thank be quiet! for sending out these units for VH to review.

Tech Link (Power Supply): Tagan TurboJet TG1100-U95 1,100 W Power Supply

Nowadays, for extreme PC usage, you just can't get by without a good reliable power supply. If you are in need of one, HardwareSecrets has an article up for you guys. Kentsfield will love this baby and the PSU will have enough juice to make quadcore stable.



It is a high-end power supply with active PFC. Instead of having a big 120-mm fan on its bottom it has two 80-mm fans, one at its front and the other at its back. We prefer the 120-mm fan approach, as it provides a better airflow with lower noise level. This power supply has the same size as a conventional ATX power supply, which drew our attention, as Galaxy 1000 W from Enermax had to be bigger in order to accommodate all necessary components to deliver true 1,000 W of power – and this model from Tagan is labeled 1,100 W. This gave us a hint that we needed to take a careful look on its internal design.

Tech Link (System): Running Two Systems with a Single PSU

You have got to love what HardwareZone did to their two "bare naked" systems, running on on a single PSU. The system is running with a very powerful processor, in the incarnation of Intel® Core™ 2 Duo with an MSI* motherboard equipped with an Intel® 965P Express Chipset, an MSI* 7300GS Video Card, a Fujitsu 2.5in mobile 60GB SATA hard drive, and 4x512MB Kingston DDR2-800. Aside from the unique way of getting this two systems built with one PSU, the beasty machine is very very nice looking in its fiery red theme, and consuming a little over 200w! Omigosh!

A lot of users often asked if it was ever possible to run two systems with a single power supply unit. While some users reported success, it wasn't something that we would encourage since most of today's processors would be too power hungry. It may still be possible to power up two of the latest Intel Pentium D or Athlon 64 X2 systems but you may need to get a pretty powerful power supply to get it working.

You got to love the way this PSU is made. I love it, it is so sexy. The all black theme commands power and mystery, and it made it appear to look as more stable. Of course, they are just "looks" but nowadays, looks also plays a great role in purchasing power of the consumers. So check it out and enjoy all the screenshots.



Mushkin does a lot of things right with its XP-650 power supply, and most importantly it puts power where it's needed most - the 12V line. High end PC systems often contain a lot of peripherals, with the Mushkin Enhanced XP-650 you get a ton of device power connectors; eight Serial ATA power connectors, six molex, two PCI Express 6 pin power connectors and a floppy.

Tech Link (Power Supply): Ultra X-Connect 2nd Generation (X2)

This new PSU just makes me drool so much. I currently own a first generation Ultra* X-Connect*, and while they really do look good, I find using them on mid-atx chassis is a bit tricky. The full-atx chassis is best suited for the first-gen Ultra* X-Connect*, but even so, those huge round silver-braided-plastic-coated cables are just too huge. The benefit of making them modular just ensures you really don't have to fight for bending and forcing the stiff cables around your chassis, if they aren't modular in the first place, they'd be counter-productive.

Aside from the new looks and new electrical features, one design aspect I really like about this PSU is their Flex-Force Technology. It makes managing, sneaking your cable connectors inside the chassis much more easier. The feature also improves airflow, and making your chassis looking neat and clean, and for modders, neatness is king.

Then they have usual feature they had with the first version, like the High-Gloss Mirror Finish, Modular Design, and Power Protection (Short Circuit, In-Rush Current, Thermal Overload Cutoff). Other new features is the Titanium Finish, Dual-Rail, and 120mm Cooling Fan.

However, even with all those features, I think they missed Active PFC. I really don't know why they keep missing that feature. Anyway, I guess they're leaving it for the next revision.

Wow, a really small but powerful power supply. This has got to be the smallest power supply I have ever laid my eyes on, at least, one that's used on a modern PC. I have always been a fan of Enermax PowerSupply. In fact, my Enermax EG-465P-VE v1.3 was my very first sturdy power supply that withstood my OCing experiments. It never failed to amaze me how Enermax is developing their products. Their lineup, as I recall, are slowly moving into the "looking-cool" side, while still maintaining their stable performance. Their Noisetaker series looks nice, and even more, their Giant series too. Now, they are fully liberating (pun intended) themselves from traditional boring looking PSU to a new one that can capture the hearts of even a hardcore modder. Their Liberty series are really really cool!


What else can you ask for? Modular, supports for Dual Core, support for SLI, support CrossFire, BTX-ready, SATA, and that cool looking shiny black, now, my table is drool-full already. This new power supply comes in different flavors, 400w, 500w, and 620w. I'd really like to test the 620w, but my poor wallet can definitely not afford that, yay for. But I'll try and see if I can get a 500w series. And oh, I found two(2) reviews already on the web.

As I found out a few years ago building a high spec system is easy .... just go out and buy a good processor and graphics card then pair it with a well rounded motherboard and some stable memory and you are pretty much good to go, well unless you hook it all up to a £20 power supply (PSU). That £20 PSU may well boast 500w specs and look pretty and shiny but the reality is that a decent PSU (or lack off) can be the difference between your system running smoothly for years or one which causes you no end of problems.

We’ve looked at numerous supplies here in the past and on the whole they have all been high specification units and those generally come at an equally high price. It goes without saying not everyone has a huge budget to work with, however stability is still an important factor. So today we are going to look at Enermax’s mainstream model which comes in at 400w. Power supplies used to be the least-sexy component in your PC. Power supply makers spent their marketing dollars on convincing us of the benefits of quality power versus fancy bells and whistles. That changed not too long ago when customized cases came into vogue. Now you can buy power supplies with neon lights, blinking strobes, and just about anything else desired to pimp your rig. But product differentiation doesn't end at cosmetics thanks to recent hardware innovations and requirements. Modular connections were introduced in 2004 and have become a popular feature. The SATA IDE and PCI-E interfaces added new power needs, as did the return of dual video cards. Reduced noise and heat output are also high on the desired features list. And don't forget the potential replacement of the ATX form factor with BTX.


Hope you get better luck and money than me and go get that powersupply and dump that branded-wannabe power supply...
