Tech Link (Graphics): NVIDIA Leaks GeForce GTX 480 Unigine Benchmarks, 3D Surround Vision Demo

The folks at HotHardware has put up a report about the upcoming video card from nVidia. Apparently, nVidia has leaked out info of their own technology ahead of time. Go check it out...



Tom Peterson over at NVIDIA gets all the chicks. I mean with his technical know-how, witty banter and boyish good looks, it's easy to see why. Okay, maybe that's not why. Maybe it's because he gets daily hands-on time with the soon to be released but not yet, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480, otherwise known as GF100. Not only that, he also has the ability to defy and breach NVIDIA's very own NDA embargo launch times for the product, well ahead of us here in the lowly Tech Press community. I mean really Tom; do you have to steal all our thunder? Well, there is still plenty more to see in the weeks ahead, as we take our turn at the test bench with the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480, but in the mean time, take a look at what Tom has cooking in the NVIDIA lab. You can almost here the groupies up front chanting "Free Bird" and holding up lighters. Wait, that's just his florescent green test rig...

Tech Link (Industry): Hell Freezes Over: NVIDIA Announces Native SLI Support for the Intel X58 Chipset

I know, my Blog has long gone to "rest", but this news made me post again, talk about being a Fanboy *yikes*. Anyway on with the news, if there's anything Intel has been missing on for quite some time in the Chipset-GPU support arena, it is the lack of native support of SLI on Intel-branded-chipset. Since the first release of PCIe way back the i915 series (Grantsdale), it has always been clamored and requested by Intel users: fanboys or normal users alike.

There has been earlier attempts on i915P thru some "rare" products such as the Albatron Mars PX915SLI, but for some weird reason, after some time, SLI support has gone "poof". Also for those hardcore Intel fanboys, they will recall that first ever SLI was indeed supported on Intel E7525 (Tumwater???) platform even before the word SLI became a household name among the techies. Later on, a few "hacked" drivers were released to support the later series of chipsets but soon, these hacked drivers became unpopular specially when "FM Approved" drivers became the norm, diminishing the results obtained from hacked drivers.

But alas, all is not lost, Skulltrail platform has been introduced. However, like the earlier SLI support, the D5400XS is based on a pricey server chipset with dual CPU slot and so adoption isn't as "common".

Hmm, I guess it's a bit of a mouthful introduction. Anyway, there are a few articles now floating on the web and I happen to grab this one from AMDTech (oops, Anandtech I mean):

Of course NVIDIA would wait until I physically left NVISION 08 to actually make an interesting announcement, but there’s no bitterness, I swear :)

The big, no, huge news from today? NVIDIA is enabling native support for 2 and 3-way SLI on Intel X58 based motherboards...without the use of any nForce 200 chips

Misc: 8600gts released in australia today!

A forum member apparently got hold of a retail graphics card based on NVIDIA* 8600GTS engine from a retail shop. Well, it could have been just normal news, except that, this card is yet to be released, and is scheduled no ealier than April 17, 2007 in the US. So today is April 06, 2007 (April 05, 2007 in the US) so that is 11 to 12 days earlier from release! NDA for benchmarks isn't even allowed to be posted yet! Tech Link (Motherboard): eVGA 680i LT SLI Motherboard Review

This new motherboard is the newest member of nVidia's reference board geared for the enthusiast. While I prefer Intel-branded chipset-based motherboard, when it comes to native SLI, it's the only choice for now. LegitReviews pit the board to several benchmarks and the author came out with good conclusion. Check this one out...



Final Thoughts and Conclusions
The nForce 680i LT SLI motherboard brings the performance of the 680i SLI motherboard to a lower price point by removing a few components and limiting some of the features that are found in the BIOS. While many of the luxury features that are used on the 680i SLI have been removed, we found that the performance and level of overclocking between the two boards to be too close to tell a a difference.

There really isn't too much more to say about the nForce 680i LT SLI as there isn't really anything new about the product itself! NVIDIA wanted a part that would fill the void between the 680i and 650i and the 680i LT SLI does just that with a reasonable price-tag for the performance level that is offers. At $199 this board will peak the interest of many gamers that want to have a board that supports SLI Technology!

The only gripe that I have with the 680i LT SLI is the active cooling that is used on both the SPP and MCP, which seems inadequate from our testing. When overclocking I used my infrared digital laser pyrometer to find out the surface temperature of the SPP and was shocked with the findings. Under load when the SPP heat sink was found to be 55-60C, which is too hot for my tastes.

At first it looked like NVIDIA was going to neuter a perfectly good board, but it seems that the Testosterone is still present and this 680i LT SLI is by no means a dog!

Legit Bottom Line: The NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI motherboard brings the performance of the 680i series down to ~$199 without taking away significantly from the level of performance and overclocking one would expect from these boards

Tech Link (Industry): CeBIT 2007: MSI motherboard roundup; nForce 680i with Creative X-Fi onboard; Intel 965 plus Crossfire;

Digitimes has a good coverage for the CEBIT2007. They posted a neat slew of motherboards from MSI*, with i965 and nForce chipset. Check it out...



The P6N Diamond combines some of the big names in enthusiast hardware; the nForce 680i – the current flagship chipset from Nvidia, and Creative's X-Fi Extreme Audio. This integrated version of the X-Fi series may lack some of the features that the add-in cards deliver, but for many the opportunity to have X-Fi onboard means lower costs and better performance than other integrated audio solutions. MSI mentioned that it has been working closely with Creative for over two years and the co-operation is working well for both parties.

Tech Link (Motherboard): A1 Revising your Motherboards for Kentsfield

If you are unfortunate enough not to be able to replace your 680i-based board with a Kentsfield-overclocking version, then you might want to do this mod. vr-zone has a guide that not only covers eVGA's, but also on ASUS P5N32-E SLI or ASUS Striker Extreme. Note that eVGA is using NVIDIA*'s reference board, so mod on the eVGA is, theoretically, doable on other reference boards as well (Asus* is an ODM, so they make their own design). Anyway, check it out...



About two weeks ago, EVGA announced that their NVIDIA 680i SLI Motherboards have gone into the Revision A1 state, an updated revision with improved overclocking for the Quad Core Kentsfield Users. As a show of their good customer service, they have offered direct cross swap for all customers of the first version of EVGA 680i boards and to cover the shipping costs both directions.

It's all good and easy if you live in the US, but some staying in certain countries may even find this "win-win" arrangement difficult... Or even, those with NVIDIA Reference boards but not under the EVGA brand name might not even be offered this service. Or even, those with non-reference 680i motherboards, what to do? I was lucky enough to receive a A1 revision and checked out what is it that is actually changed:

Gameplay Analysis
From our experiences playing at 2560x1600 on the Dell 3007WFP 30” LCD with two BFGTech GeForce 8800 GTXs in SLI we can definitely see a trend. Quite simply the AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 is bottlenecking the 8800 GTX SLI to varying degrees. In Flight Simulator X and Medieval II: Total War we find it bottlenecking SLI to a very high degree. The Intel Core 2 Duo X6800 allowed us to obtain “free” 8X AA on the BFGTech GeForce 8800 GTX SLI in Flight Simulator X and also run at the “Medium High” scenery setting. With the AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 we had to lower the AA setting to 2X AA and reduce the scenery settings.

In Medieval II: Total War we experienced a smoother gameplay experience with the Intel Core 2 Duo X6800, especially with thousands of characters onscreen at the same time. With the AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 we had to reduce the character detail as well as the antialiasing setting. These two games were by far the largest differences we saw between both platforms. They greatly demonstrate how SLI needs a fast CPU to feed it at high resolutions.

We also saw a distinct performance difference in Oblivion. However, it was not enough to impact our visual quality settings. The gameplay experience was “smoother” on the Intel Core 2 Duo X6800 and the framerates did not drop down as low, but the game was still playable on the AMD Athlon 64 FX-62. It is very impressive to see Oblivion at 2560x1600 with 2X AA and HDR with maximum in-game settings; this really shows the power that 8800 GTX SLI can provide in games.

Battlefield 2142 also showed us a distinct performance difference, but the framerates were so high that it didn’t matter. We were consistently experiencing framerates above 60 FPS with the AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 at 2048x1536 with 16X TR SSAA. That is quite incredible; 16X TR SSAA at 2048x1536 and above 60 FPS! F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, Need for Speed Carbon and World of Warcraft showed us smaller differences that simply translated to no true differences in-game.

Conclusion
Do we need more graphics memory?

In this evaluation, especially under Oblivion and some other games, we talked about some odd performance experiences. We said that at certain very high settings we experienced a “choppy” or “laggy” feeling in the game even though the framerate indicated playable framerates. It may be that the games are able to render fast enough with 8800 GTX SLI but it may not be able to dump that information to video card memory fast enough, or, it may be running out of framebuffer space on the video card. Could it be that 768 MB of RAM on the video card is simply not enough for certain settings like 2560x1600 4X AA in Oblivion or motion blur being enabled in Need for Speed Carbon?


It may very well not be enough considering how much demand is on the memory at those settings. Perhaps 1 GB or more of graphics memory on video cards doesn’t sound so unorthodox now. Certainly it may not benefit single-GPU video cards as much right now, but with two 8800 GTXs in SLI running at 2560x1600 1 GB or more of graphics card RAM per video card, with more memory bandwidth may just be the ticket for letting the 8800 GTX GPU in SLI really shine. We saw the framerates it can render, but we just can’t play at those levels yet with the current bottlenecks, whatever they may be.

Tech Link (Graphics): The Silent XFX Fatal1ty GeForce 7600GT

If you are looking for a nice video card that will not break the bank, then HardwareUpgrade might just have what you are looking for. It is passively cooled (aka silent) and comes factory overclocked so it's a plus. The video card looks really cool, but only because of the passive cooler and color and not necessarily because of the Fatal1ty logo. Check it out...



Conclusion
Thanks to the faster operating frequencies of the XFX Fatal1ty 7600 GT, it is able to outperform the reference NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT along with all three Radeon X1650XT contenders. Through Newegg, the video card is currently available for $179.99. Most Radeon X1650XT cards run for around $20 less, but the passive cooling solution of the XFX Fatal1ty 7600 GT makes it worth the 20 bucks more.

The video card is factory overclocked and is the most factory overclocked and guaranteed video card currently available. Even though it is already overclocked, we tried to increase its operating frequencies even further, but didn’t get very far compared to the factory overclock. The maximum we reached was 670 MHz for the core and 1635 MHz for memory.

The video card is a definite plus for use in HTPCs. Completely silent, it comes with NVIDIA PureVideo support and also support High Defintion videos. As we said before, it would fit perfectly into a home theater environment. The only limitation of this product, however, is that it doesn’t have any HDCP support and therefore cannot play protected high definition content at full resolution and instead only at standard definition.

Tech Link (Motherboard): ASUS P5N-E SLI nForce 650i SLI

I know that I have just posted a similar review of this motherboard yesterday, but I can't pass up posting a review of our fellow Asian reviewers from VR-Zone. The review has been done by world-reknown overclocker shamino. So check it out...



The ASUS P5N-E SLI definitely answers the call for a cost-effective solution for SLI + Intel Core 2 Duo. The NVIDIA NForce 650i SLI solution has it's place in the market, catering to the budget-conscious who would rather channel the savings towards other components, such as a better graphics card. The performance of this board is great, edging out many of the top boards slightly, especially when it comes to graphics performance. The penalty for running x8 x8 SLI on this board is not huge in most scenarios currently, and a 3-5% can be shrugged off easily. However, I suspect this margin to widen with upcoming games, some of which we have already seen in our tests. The overclockability of this board, in terms of FSB, is comparable to any 680i SLI boards out there - since it is running the C55 chipset like the 680i boards. This makes it all the more attractive for overclockers looking for SLI on the cheap, they with their capped Multipliers on their Core 2 Duo processors will appreciate the close to 500MHz FSB tolerance on this board. Going for USD$150 / SGD$240, this is one of the most value for money motherboards out there, and I was glad I took the time to try her out.

Final Thought and Conclusion
So, what do we think about the Asus P5N-E SLI? It was just fantastic to work with! The layout was basically fine and easy to work with. The bundle is a little weak, but with the price tag attatched to this board, there was not much to be expected. At the time of this writing, you can find the board for as little as $149.99 plus shipping over at Newegg.

One thing that should not be overlooked as we finish this review is the fact that this board, though not directly compared to a 680i board in this review, has performance capabilities that we have seen in the 680i, but at a fraction of the cost. Why would you go and spend nearly twice the price on a board that will not perform much better, if any better at all? Our answer: you shouldn't. Grant it, there are a few features that you can find on the 680i boards, that are not available in the 650i, at least not natively. Time will tell if more boards with the 650i chipset will include any added features that make it even more comparable to the 680i. We will be looking at a 680i motherboard here in the near future and will be sure to include it in the charts to compare performance across the board

Legit Bottom Line:
Asus has produced a fantastic board in the Asus P5N-E SLI. it is a board that performs as good as anything else out their in our testing, but goes way beyond anything we have seen yet in the area of overclocking. If you are looking for a great enthusiast board, with very little headaches to setup and overclock well, and you do not want to mortgage the house for the 680i series, this board is it. It is a 680i killer! This board is certainly worthy of receiving our Editor's Choice award!

Tech Link (Memory): Corsair Dominator DDR2-1111: Dual-Path Cooling Pushes Performance

AMDTech has a new memory review. They were able to request a new set of goodies from Corsair*. I am not against such RAM, but lately, things are really getting boring. I mean, yes, these RAM are great, they ran at DDR2-1111, cool. But hey, did you know that you need 2.4v to make it run at that stock speed? When will they ever reached such speed within the JEDEC standard.

I'm sure hardcore enthusiasts will not have any issues shoving such voltage, provided their motherboard can supply a stable and clean vDIMM. But hey, this DDR2 memory needs to mature, and fast. I am always excited to see fast DDR2, but I am disheartened to know that they must have such high voltage requirement to run at their stock settings. I guess I'll have to stick with my Micron DDR2-533MHz which can run at DDR2-1000@2.7v@CL5-5-5-15. True, not the best timing, but hey this RAM is like 2+ years old already and I never even have fancy coolers over these RAMs. This is why I am not prepared to shove anything higher than 2.4v on these DIMMs anymore, since the new RAMs I am seeing is basically the same anyway, just with better cooling. Oh well, enough with the New Year rant and go check out the review.



Final Words

As was mentioned in the recent review of OCZ Flex XLC, the best DDR2 memory in the market is able to run at DDR2-800 3-3-3 timings and DDR2-1066 at 4-4-3. Those performance levels still have not changed. However Corsair Dominator PC2-8888 has added a new benchmark for enthusiast memory of DDR2-1233 at 4-4-4-12 timings. It was exciting to be running DDR2-1067 at 4-4-3 timings and reaching DDR2-1100 at 4-4-4 was something once thought impossible for DDR2. Now with Dominator running DDR2-1233 at 4-4-4 timings memory performance has pushed the envelope even further.

Now that memory is unified, with all major platforms running DDR2, the performance of DDR2 has moved forward with incredible speed. It doesn't appear Micron D can be pushed much further - even with aggressive binning - so we wonder what the next milestone will be and which memory chip or memory manufacturer will take us there.

For now if you are looking for the very best overclocking memory you can buy for your new rig, then Corsair Dominator PC2-8888 should definitely be on your list. So should OCZ PC2-9200 Flex XLC. Both memories provide remarkable performance and push DDR2 performance to new levels. The absolute fastest memory tested is definitely Corsair Dominator DDR2-1111, which reached DDR2-1315 at 5-5-5-15 timings and the even more remarkable DDR2-1233 at 4-4-4-12 timings. If your platform will be 680i or 650i then Dominator is your best choice. OCZ Flex XLC is a bit slower at DDR2-1300 on the same platform, but it is also an excellent choice.

If your new rig will use an Intel 965X chipset then Corsair Dominator is again a good choice. We reached over DDR2-1200 on an ASUS P5B in very limited testing. For a 975x motherboard we would tip the scales to the OCZ Flex XLC. Flex seems more at home on the demanding 975X platform and reaches higher overclocks, but Dominator is no slouch on the 975X either. The Corsair Dominator may be just an SPD upgrade away from being equally excellent on the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe.

It's a lot of fun reviewing memory like the Corsair Dominator. It certainly isn't cookie cutter, and the performance levels reached truly make the testing worth the effort. Corsair has done a good job in analyzing the problems with pushing DDR2 speed, and their solution is both unique and effective. The 4-layer fins on Dominator cool very well, and when coupled with the three-fan and near silent airflow memory cooler, you can take DDR2 to new speed levels. The same can be said for the recently reviewed OCZ Flex XLC, which finds a different but equally effective solution to pushing memory speed to higher levels.

The question that remains is whether the speed gains also yield the performance increase that make the product worth what it costs. The unfortunate reality with Core 2 Duo and AMD is that neither platform is particularly bandwidth starved or bandwidth sensitive. This means the sometimes massive DDR2 speed increase we are seeing in innovative new designs like the Corsair Dominator often make only a small difference in bottom-line performance. Performance is better with the higher speeds as clearly demonstrated in out test results, but the real increases are very small.

The question then is whether memory that sells for $600 for a 2GB kit is worth it. You can certainly buy a 2GB kit for less than half that price that will provide most of the performance of the $600 kit. For those who measure their system purchases on a value basis it will be difficult to justify $600 for Corsair Dominator PC2-1111, even though it is the fastest memory we have tested. However, Corsair Dominator PC2-8888 was not designed for the value buyer. Many other companies, including Corsair, have memory products that will satisfy the value equation. Corsair Dominator PC2-8888 is for buyers who have to have the best - the fastest - the top performance - regardless of cost. If they buy PC2-8888 they will definitely get the best available on the memory market.

The Airflow fan unit is also available at Newegg and other vendors for about $20. If you have enthusiast memory or overclock, the Corsair Airflow fan is a great and useful accessory and a very good value for what it does. When you consider an 80mm fan jury-rigged into place will already cost $5-10, the $20 Airflow looks better, installs easier, and doesn't cost much at all - and it just might extend the life of your RAM if you run at higher voltages.

Final Thought and Conclusion
So, how do we end this review? We end it by saying that this board is a nice board. It has some nice features, and its bundle is pretty good to boot. It is a rather attractive board (subjective, I know), so it does have a flare to it. The layout is very good, leaving room to work on the board. The only issue is the top pcie x16 slot, which is difficult to use with the heat sink fan unit that is being used on the southbridge. It is also shame that this board did not have a great BIOS to work with, but that can easily be fixed as when the board comes out ECS can release updates for the BIOS. We hope that ECS willl get a new BIOS out the door that will help with the overclocking of this board.

If you are looking at this board, you canexpect the MSRP to be around $139.99 - $149.99. As of now, it is not listed at any etailers, but according to ECS, you can expect it to shop up at the usual suspects! If you are the average Joe that set it and forgets it, this will be a board that will fill the bill so to say. If you are an enthusiast, it is hard to recommend this board, when you have the Intel Chipsets like the 975X that is rock solid and the NVIDIA 680i and ATI RD600 which have new overclocking features like unlinked memory frequencies.

Legit Bottom Line:
ECS really produced a decent board in the PN1 SLI2 Extreme. I cannot help but think that it could have really been an Extreme board with just a little more attention, especially in the BIOS department.
