Article: Intel Fanboy's Journey to the beyond, err, Apple® iPad

Well, it should be apparent that I'm no Apple® lover; if not, well I'm saying I am not an Apple® lover. What with Mac being based off a different architecture back then. However, not that I hate Apple, specially when Apple® made one of their greatest decision: go x86 on their "computer" platform (there, I never called Apple's devices "PC"). It's just that, like many others in the computer era, I belong to the "masses" of Windows user. And being this as my first ever "Apple device", I am now a newbie, novice, or back in the the days of CB radio, I am what they call a "green apple" (pun intended of course). Before moving forward with the article, whenever I mention "Apple", it refers to the "x86" platform (i.e. hardware and/or software) or the "company" unless otherwise stated. Also note that the images here aren't mine, I just took em off the interwebz, so if you own the image and offended by me using it without permission, lemme know and I will remove it

Misc: Free WiFi at the Hong Kong airport

The joy of using free broadband. I am now browsing the net and blogging at HK International Airport Gate 46 going to Los Angeles by 01:15 PM today. My connection is fairly low in terms of speed (5.5Mbps). Most probably because I am quite far from an access point (wherever that may be).

I remember going to Texas, USA last year, and in the same airport, at Gate 6, I got some sort of WiFi signal but it's a PPV (pay-per-view) i.e. you need to enter your credit card number. And I was like "WTH, Singapore Changi Airport has free WiFi everywhere and this airport has very limited WiFi scope and they even charge for it".

So anyway, nowadays, PCCW's free wifi coverage seems a lot "larger and wider" in scope. I have been getting nice coverage and "Fair" signal from this Gate 46 and some areas in SkyMall. But the best place should be at the top level where the restaurants are, and near the Wild Fire restaurant. There's an "ad-box" near there, and there's an open lounge where people can sit. They also have a table so travellers can easily put down their things. But the best is that they have a power outlet because of the ad-box. Sure, you can sit down in places where there's signal, but hey, this location is best for me coz I am also charging my lappy and my mobile phone.

I am thinking of making a dedicated web page for airport that has free wifi and how to access them and what's the best location. Hmmm, this should be nice, if only for my own use so I don't forget which area is best whenever I roam the Globe.

Tech Link (Industry): Google patents free Wi-Fi

The search-engine giant has developed three technologies for offering wireless Internet access, and advertising, free of charge.

SAN FRANCISCO (Business 2.0 Magazine) - More evidence has emerged that Google is getting ready to blanket the U.S. with free Wi-Fi, as Business 2.0 senior writer Om Malik reported last year. Now, the company has filed for three patents related to offering wireless Internet access. Search Engine Roundtable points out that the patents all have to do with serving up advertising through a wireless Internet connection maintained by a third party, whose brand Google would include in the presentation of those ads. Sounds a lot like Google's latest plan to unwire San Francisco, where it has teamed up with EarthLink (Research). By teaming up with partners who would build the actual Wi-Fi infrastructure, Google (Research) could complete a nationwide Wi-Fi network much more quickly than if it had to build it itself.
